Fire/EMS

Fire Service and EMS leaders face specific challenges: motivating professionals to respond to critical incidents and to provide a much broader range of services to the community. On the fireground or the street, command structures help to direct action, but most departments face their greatest challenges not in incident response but back at the station. This is equally true for career, volunteer professional, and hybrid departments.

Make no mistake, what happens at the firehouse or the base affects what happens on calls. More important, the value that your agency brings to the community far exceeds emergency response. Great leaders motivate responders to work together on incidents and to fully participate in other initiatives, from code enforcement and education to community outreach to promote public health and safety.

Let Ethical Leaders in Action help you:

  • Train and support command and company officers to bring out the best in their teams.
  • Solve persistent personnel and leadership problems that affect morale and engagement.
  • Deepen your leadership bench strength and plan for succession.
  • Achieve recruitment and retention goals to assure a robust response capability and a strong department into the future.

Our Services

In Fire and Emergency Medical Service organization, leadership is the critical factor for maintaining safe, effective, efficient operations. With hierarchical command structures in place, too many leaders rely on formal command and direction, and they get compliance…disengagement…and lackluster performance. Ethical leaders at all levels – from the Fire Chief to the “barn bosses,” – can make the difference between an organization that meets minimal standards, and one which provides outstanding public service consistently and cost-effectively.

We work with leaders in fire departments and EMS organizations to develop and sharpen leadership skills, and to create a culture of effective, ethical leadership in their agencies. Specific services include:

This program combines training and consulting, bringing together a cohort of departmental officers over a period of months to learn leadership skills, become a stronger team, and solve problems while they work to move the department forward. Suitable for chief/command and company/line officers.

We present half-day, full-day, and multi-session training programs to expose an entire department to ethical leadership concepts tailored to your specific organization and its needs. We also present seminars for multiple departments through mutual aid or other associations, or sponsored by a single department.
